Library Express - A delivery program for our patrons who are homebound
Library Express is an IMCPL program that utilizes well-screened volunteers to select and deliver Library material to our patrons who are unable to visit the Library due to physical / medical limitations. Library Express is an ongoing service to our patrons as opposed to one-time deliveries.
Who is eligible to receive this service?
Marion County residents who are homebound are elligible for Library Express service.
Is there a fee for this service?
No. This service is free.
Is a physician's statement required in order to receive this service?
No. Patrons who have a physical or medical limitation that prevents them from visiting the Library may sign up for Library Express.
Will the same volunteer always be helping me?
Yes. We match one volunteer to one patron. This allows the volunteer to become familiar with the type of material in which you are interested. The volunteer and patron communicate directly with one another on an ongoing basis.
How often will my volunteer make a delivery?
Deliveries are arranged at a time that is mutually convenient for the volunteer and the patron. Because Library items can be checked out for 3 weeks, volunteers generally make deliveries every three weeks.
I can no longer drive to the Library myself, but a family member is willing to pick up my Library material for me. Do we sign up to be a part of the Library Express Program?
No. Library Express is designed for our patrons who have no one to provide this service. If you have a family member, neighbor or friend who would like to pick up your Library material for you, they will need to speak to the Circulation Staff at their Branch Library in order to become authorized to check out material for you. This arrangement does not fall under the umbrella of the Library Express program.
I am able to drive or walk to the Library when the weather is good, however, during the winter I do not like to risk getting out. Can I still sign up for Library Express?
Yes. We always encourage patrons to visit the Library whenever possible. However, you will need to communicate closely with your volunteer and notify them when you intend to make the trip yourself in order to prevent duplicate trips to the Library.
I have a medical condition that will leave me homebound for six to eight months. May I sign up for this service on a temporary basis?
Yes.
Will the volunteer use my Library Card to check out my material?
No. The volunteer will not have possession of your Library Card. You will maintain the possession of your card. The Library will issue your volunteer a Library Express Card authorizing them to check out items on your behalf on your Library account. The volunteer must present this card to the Library circulation staff each time they check out items for you.
How do you screen Library Express volunteers?
Volunteer applicants must successfully complete a screening process that includes a personal interview conducted by the Manager of Support Programs and a criminal history background check.
